COATESVILLE, Pennsylvania — October 15, 2026 — Authorities are continuing to investigate a shooting in Coatesville that left a 14-year-old boy hospitalized and led to criminal charges against two suspects. The incident occurred Tuesday evening, October 13, and has renewed concerns among residents about gun violence in the community.

According to police and local news reports, officers responded to the area of East Chestnut Street and North Eighth Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. following a ShotSpotter notification indicating that 11 rounds had been fired. Responding officers later found the teenage victim on East Diamond Street, approximately one block away, suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower torso.

14-Year-Old Victim Hospitalized

Emergency responders transported the injured teenager to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment. As of Thursday, October 15, he remained hospitalized in fair condition, and reports indicated that he was expected to recover.

The shooting prompted a police response as investigators worked to establish what happened and identify those responsible. Residents in the area expressed concern about the violence and the potential danger to people who live, work, or travel through the neighborhood.

The victim's identity has not been publicly established in the reports reviewed. Authorities have not released a confirmed motive for the shooting.

15-Year-Old Suspect Charged as an Adult

Police identified the alleged shooter as 15-year-old Zaid-An Butcher. He faces charges including attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license, and related offenses. Although he is 15, authorities said he is being prosecuted as an adult.

Investigators said the suspect allegedly fled the area in a vehicle with 18-year-old Jonah Riggs. At approximately 7:10 p.m., officers located the vehicle in the parking lot of the King of Prussia Mall in Montgomery County.

With assistance from Upper Merion Township police, authorities apprehended both individuals and transported them for further investigation.

Riggs was charged with carrying a firearm without a license. Both defendants reportedly remained in custody after failing to post bail set at $150,000 each. The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Police Continue Investigating the Shooting

Detectives are working to determine what led to the gunfire and whether additional evidence or witness accounts may clarify the circumstances. Authorities have not announced a confirmed motive.
