Fort Hood Shooting Victims: One Dead and Two Injured in 2026 Memorial Day Weekend Shooting

A shooting at Fort Hood’s Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area during Memorial Day weekend in 2026 left one teenager dead and two other people injured, according to military officials. The incident occurred Saturday evening, May 23, during a large gathering at the recreation area on the Texas Army installation.

Authorities said gunfire erupted at approximately 9 p.m. after military police had responded to reports of disorderly conduct at the recreation area. The gathering reportedly involved a large crowd, and officials had received earlier reports involving alcohol, drugs and minors. Two suspects were detained at the scene, although their identities had not initially been released.

The person who died was identified as Mia Griffin, 17, a Harker Heights High School senior who was preparing to graduate just days after the shooting. She was transported from the recreation area by helicopter but later died at a hospital. Her death brought particular sorrow to her school community, where she had been preparing for an important milestone in her life.

Two additional victims survived the shooting. A service member suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene before being released. A civilian who was not affiliated with the Department of Defense was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Fort Hood officials said the military police officers who responded to the shooting were not injured.

The incident began after military police were called to the recreation area around 7 p.m. following anonymous reports of disorderly conduct. Officials said the reports included a vehicle bypassing gate security and other concerns. When gunfire broke out, additional military police and local emergency responders were sent to the area.

Video circulated on social media appeared to show military police responding to an altercation before multiple gunshots were heard. Fort Hood officials confirmed that military police fired their weapons during the confrontation, but investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.

The Army Criminal Investigation Division opened an investigation into the shooting. At the time of the latest available reporting, no charges had been filed, and investigators had not released a detailed explanation of the events that led to the shooting or identified the suspected shooters publicly.

The 2026 incident should not be confused with the infamous 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting, which killed 13 people and wounded 32 others. Former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan was convicted in that attack and sentenced to death. His planned December 2026 execution has renewed attention on the victims and survivors of the earlier tragedy.

The more recent shooting has likewise left a community grieving, particularly following the death of Griffin, whose graduation was only days away. The investigation remains important to determining exactly what happened and whether additional criminal charges will follow.
