Heiko Weber Obituary: Former Carl Zeiss Jena Player and Coach Dies at 61 After Cancer Battle

German football is mourning Heiko Weber, the former player and coach whose remarkable career left a lasting mark on FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Weber died on the morning of October 26, 2026, at the age of 61, following a serious cancer illness that he publicly disclosed earlier this year. His passing has prompted tributes from his former club, supporters, and people across German football.

A Remarkable Career at Carl Zeiss Jena

Born on June 26, 1965, in Thale, East Germany, Weber developed into a respected footballer known to supporters as Benno. He joined Carl Zeiss Jena in 1988 and became an important figure during a period of significant change in German football.

Across his playing career with Jena, Weber appeared in more than 300 matches, establishing a strong connection with the club and its supporters. One of his most memorable achievements came in 1991, when he scored the final goal in the history of the East German DDR-Oberliga. His goal against Energie Cottbus helped Jena secure promotion to the second division of German football.

Weber also scored Jena's final home goal in European competition on October 26, 1988, against Italian side Sampdoria. Remarkably, he died exactly 38 years later, on the anniversary of that historic moment.

Success as a Football Manager

After his playing career, Weber moved into coaching and eventually returned to lead Carl Zeiss Jena. Taking charge in 2004, he inherited a team competing in the fourth division.

His leadership helped transform the club's fortunes. Jena achieved consecutive promotions in 2005 and 2006, returning to the second Bundesliga and giving supporters memorable seasons of success.

Weber subsequently worked with other clubs, including Energie Cottbus, Erzgebirge Aue, SSV Markranstädt, and ZFC Meuselwitz. His career demonstrated his commitment to developing players and building competitive teams.

His Battle With Cancer

Weber made his serious cancer diagnosis public in February 2026. His illness prompted an outpouring of support from Carl Zeiss Jena supporters, former teammates, and the wider football community.

A fundraising campaign was organized to help cover treatment and pain-management expenses. In June, former teammates and colleagues gathered for a benefit match in Weida, where Weber made a final appearance on the coaching bench.

Tributes and Lasting Legacy

Following his death, Carl Zeiss Jena expressed profound sadness, remembering Weber as someone who had shaped the club during the years surrounding German reunification.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, he was remembered as a warm, supportive individual who encouraged others and helped young people pursue their goals.

Remembering Heiko Weber

Heiko Weber's legacy extends beyond statistics and promotions. His historic goals, coaching achievements, and connection with Carl Zeiss Jena secured his place in the club's history.

As supporters remember his contribution to German football, condolences go to his family, friends, former teammates, and everyone affected by his passing.
