Johnson, 45, died following a three-year battle with leukemia, leaving behind a legacy built on mentorship, determination, faith, and service to young people.

Remembering Coach Jake Johnson

Johnson joined Millsap Independent School District in 2015 and became an influential figure in the school's athletic program. During his tenure, he helped develop the Millsap Bulldogs football team while emphasizing discipline, character, teamwork, and personal responsibility.

For Johnson, coaching extended beyond winning games. He believed football could teach young athletes lessons that would guide them throughout their lives. His approach earned him respect from players, fellow coaches, and families across the community.

His wife, Cassie Johnson, remembered him as an exceptional coach who viewed everyday experiences as opportunities to teach important lessons. Her tribute reflected the commitment he brought to both his profession and his family.

His Battle With Leukemia

Johnson's death followed a difficult three-year fight against leukemia. Reports indicate that he underwent intensive treatment, including stem cell treatments, and experienced a period of remission during the summer of 2026.

When the disease returned in September, he stepped away from the sidelines to receive additional treatment. Despite his illness, his commitment to his players remained evident, and he had hoped to continue coaching remotely while receiving care.

His determination during this period became another example of the perseverance that had characterized his work with the Bulldogs.

A Lasting Impact on Millsap

News of Johnson's passing deeply affected the school community. Millsap ISD described him as a valued and impactful member whose contributions would influence generations of students.

At his family's request, the Bulldogs played their scheduled game against Eastland on October 23. Millsap won 63–0, with players taking the field amid the grief of losing their coach.

The game became an emotional opportunity for the team to honor Johnson and the lessons he had taught them.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Cassie, and their children, Braun and Payton. His family, players, colleagues, and friends continue to remember his influence on their lives.

A funeral service is scheduled for November 1, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Millsap High School Stadium in Texas.
