Julia Rocha Death, Weslaco, TX Obituary: Community Mourns First Female Firefighter After Tragic Passing

The Weslaco, Texas, community is grieving the tragic passing of Julia Divine Rocha, a young firefighter whose courage, determination, and commitment to public service made her an important part of the local fire service. Julia died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at just 21 years old. Her death, alongside fellow Weslaco firefighter Lieutenant Juan “Johnny” Peña, has left family members, colleagues, and residents heartbroken.

Born on April 1, 2005, Julia was the beloved daughter of Flor Villalobos and granddaughter of Flora Villalobos. Although her life was brief, she pursued a career that allowed her to help others and contribute meaningfully to the safety of her community.

Breaking Barriers as a Female Firefighter

Julia made history in February 2026 when she became the first female firefighter in the Weslaco Fire Department. At the time, she was 20 years old and had taken on the challenge of entering a profession traditionally dominated by men.

Her journey into firefighting began after she reconsidered her college studies in psychology. Inspired by a friend who worked as a firefighter and encouraged to pursue something different, she enrolled in the fire academy at South Texas College.

The training demanded physical strength, discipline, and determination. Julia spoke publicly about the demanding tests and physical challenges she faced, explaining that she kept pushing herself even when the experience became difficult.

Her achievement was a source of pride, particularly because of the sacrifices her aunt had made while helping raise her. Julia's determination also became an encouraging example for other women considering careers in emergency services.

Her Service in the Rio Grande Valley

According to her published obituary, Julia served for approximately one year with the Pharr Fire Department before continuing her firefighting career with Weslaco Fire Department Station 2. Her commitment to protecting others reflected the purpose she found in emergency service.

She is survived by her mother, Flor Villalobos; grandmother, Flora Villalobos; siblings Joshua Frias, Joseph Rocha, Cathrine Frias, and Angel Frias; and other relatives who will continue to cherish her memory.

Investigation and Funeral Arrangements

Weslaco police confirmed that Julia and Lieutenant Johnny Peña died in an off-duty incident on October 28. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the circumstances, and the deaths remain under investigation. It is important not to speculate about the cause.

Julia's obituary lists visitation for November 2, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 6 p.m., at Lord and I Funeral Homes in Peñitas. Further services are scheduled for November 3.

As Weslaco remembers Julia Rocha, her determination, trailblazing achievement, and dedication to helping others remain part of her legacy. Heartfelt condolences go to her family, friends, and fellow firefighters.
