The University of Mississippi community and the city of Madison, Mississippi, were devastated by the tragic deaths of Samuel Clayton Kelly, Bryant Mason Wilbanks, and Charles Walker Kelly, three freshmen whose lives were cut short in a car accident near Vaiden in October 2011.
The three friends died on October 30, 2011, while returning to Oxford after visiting their families in Madison. Their deaths shocked their loved ones, former classmates, fraternity brothers, and the wider Ole Miss community. Years later, their memory continues through tributes and a scholarship endowment established in their honor.
Remembering Samuel Clayton Kelly, Bryant Mason Wilbanks and Charles Walker Kelly
Samuel Clayton Kelly was 18, while Bryant Mason Wilbanks and Charles Walker Kelly were both 19. All three were graduates of Madison Central High School and had recently begun their university journeys at Ole Miss.
The young men attended Broadmoor Baptist Church and were members of the university's Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. Friends and family remembered them as close companions whose friendships had become an important part of their lives.
Their time at the university was tragically brief, but the relationships they built left a lasting impression on those who knew them.

A Legacy That Continues
In the years following the accident, relatives, friends, and fraternity members helped establish the Charles Walker Kelly, Samuel Clayton Kelly and Bryant Mason Wilbanks Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The fund supports future students and preserves the three friends' legacy at Ole Miss.
By 2025, the endowment had grown to more than $500,000, demonstrating the lasting commitment of those determined to keep their memories alive.
Though their lives ended far too soon, Samuel, Bryant, and Charles remain remembered through the friendships they shared, the families who loved them, and the scholarships that continue their legacy.
