Sophia Gardner Obituary, Car Accident, Death: Uxbridge High School Student Dies After Worcester County Crash

Sophia Gardner, a 15-year-old student at Uxbridge High School in Massachusetts, has died following a single-vehicle crash in Uxbridge that left her school and hometown community mourning. Gardner was identified by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office on October 7, several days after the October 3 crash on Chocolog Road.

According to authorities, emergency crews responded at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday to the area of 685 Chocolog Road after a Ford Focus left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Gardner was ejected from the car and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where she was later pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Authorities have not publicly established what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and information about the conditions of the other two occupants has been limited. Investigators have asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Uxbridge Police Department.

News of Gardner’s death has deeply affected Uxbridge High School. Before her identity was publicly released, school officials informed families that the community had lost a student following a single-vehicle crash. The district activated its crisis response team and made counselors and support personnel available to students and staff.

Following Gardner’s identification, Uxbridge High School Principal Dr. Michael Rubin expressed condolences to Gardner’s family, friends and classmates. The school also postponed its homecoming dance as students and staff worked through the loss. Additional adjustments to athletic activities were also being considered as the school community responded to the tragedy.

A memorial has also appeared near the crash site, with community members leaving flowers and stuffed animals in remembrance of Gardner. Local residents and students have gathered to pay tribute as the town attempts to come to terms with the sudden death of a young member of the community.

Gardner’s death has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from school and town leaders. Superintendent David Ljungberg previously asked the community to respect the family’s privacy while extending care and support to Gardner’s loved ones. School officials emphasized that grief resources would remain available for students and families who need assistance.

A community fundraising effort has also been established to support Gardner’s parents during the difficult period following her death. Organizers said the effort was intended to help ease some of the family's everyday burdens while they navigate the loss of their daughter.

At this time, Gardner’s death is being treated as the result of a tragic motor vehicle crash, but investigators have not announced a definitive cause of the collision. No information currently supports speculation about what caused the driver to lose control.

As the investigation continues, authorities may release additional information concerning the crash, including the circumstances involving the vehicle and the other occupants. For now, the Uxbridge community continues to remember Sophia Gardner and support her family, classmates and friends following a heartbreaking loss.
