BEND, OREGON — A devastating school shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School has left three children and a teacher dead, while two others were injured in an attack that has shaken the Bend community. The shooting occurred on October 15, 2026, when a 16-year-old former student entered a special-education classroom and opened fire, according to police.
What Happened at Silver Rail Elementary?
Authorities said the incident began shortly before 1 p.m. local time. Investigators reported that the suspect, identified as Griffin J. John II, forced his way into the school after firing through glass panes in the building's exterior doors.
He then entered a classroom serving students with special needs and fired multiple rounds. Police said six people in the classroom were shot.
The victims who died included three boys, aged 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. The youngest child was identified as Rhoam Summer. The families of the other two boys requested that their names remain private.
Two Survivors Hospitalized
A seven-year-old girl and 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury were wounded in the attack. Initial reports said the child was in serious but stable condition, while Drury suffered serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The incident has prompted concern about the safety of children and educators, particularly those working in specialised learning environments.
Teacher and Parent Intervene
Police credited the actions of a teacher and a parent with helping prevent further casualties. Investigators said the teacher threw her cellphone at the gunman, tackled him and attempted to take his weapon.
A 36-year-old parent, identified in reports as Kaylub Giamanco, also intervened. Police said he entered the classroom with a legally possessed firearm and shot the suspect, who died at the scene.
Investigation Into the Motive
Authorities identified John as a former Silver Rail student who was no longer enrolled in the school district. Officials said he had previously received special-needs education, but investigators have not established why he attacked the classroom.
Police and the FBI are examining evidence, interviewing witnesses and investigating how the teenager obtained the shotgun used in the attack. No confirmed motive has been announced.
Community Remembers the Victims
Flowers and other tributes have appeared near the school as families, students and residents grieve. Lambert's family remembered her as a compassionate educator who advocated for children with special needs.
The tragedy has renewed calls for careful attention to school security, student wellbeing and support for traumatised survivors.
As the investigation continues, the Bend community faces the difficult task of mourning those lost while supporting injured victims and their families.
